Fill stockpot about half way with hot water and on the stove over medium heat. Wash, peel and slice the potatoes. If there are large slices, cut them in half. Place them into the water when done slicing.
Chop the onions, adding them as well. If more water is needed, add additional water to cover the potatoes and onion. Bring to a boil for a few minutes.
Add garlic, milk (if wanted), butter, salt and pepper.
Stirring often over medium – medium/low heat until the potatoes are soft and the base is thickened.
Additional things
Feel free to add cooked sausage, bacon or ham into the soup.
Scrambled eggs are good mixed in as well.
Can even add a meat, scrambled egg and top with cheese for a good breakfast bowl.
